News, updated 30th January 2011
From January 2011, Norman and Rita Kenyon will no longer be selling tennis balls. New balls (tubes of four) can be purchased from John Levantis (01359-240708) at £3.50 (Dunlop Fort).

- Congratulations to the Mens Team who have been unbeaten this season in Div.2 of the Norfolk and Suffolk League.
- The Club celebrated its 25th Anniversary at a lunch on 25th July, to which surviving founders and past club stalwarts were invited.

Many thanks to Pat Ward for her hard work in organising this.
- Jo Hughes will be starting some new coaching courses for both junior and adults - details on the coaching page.
- The AGM was held on 24th February. We had favourable reports from the Chairman and Treasurer. Bridgid and Julia have stood down from the committee, and we thanked them for their fine contribution to the running of the Club. We welcome Ray Gough as a new committee member, and the other members agreed to serve for a further year. For more details please ask the Hon. Sec. {Subsequent to the meeting, Kevin Robertson agreed to be coopted onto the committee, for which we are most grateful.}

- We have been having quite a good season, BUT..... on 1st July someone stole two of our padlocks, from the main gate and the clubhouse. If any member can shed light on this we would appreciate hearing from you. A depressing sequel to the minor vandalism we have been suffering lately.
- Thanks to all who came along to spruce up our facilities on 25th April, particularly to John Christie and Roland Thomas who spent hours filling in the sort of footbath that we had to wade through on wet days at the entrance.
- Due to the fall of sterling against the euro the Technifibre balls have become too expensive (over £6 for four), so it's back to Slazenger Wimbledon.
- Interested in match play? Now's the time to contact the captains: for the ladies speak to Julia (01359-240838); for mixed team speak to Linda (07923 593269).

- Floodlights: you no longer need a token, so the lights are free, but please be careful to light only the court you are playing on (see instructions inside the clubhouse) and switch off when you have finished.
- Unfortunately, due to unexpected non-availability of both Linda and Peter, we have had to cancel the Junior end-of-season tournament, which was to have been held on Friday 5th September - very sorry!
- We had a good turnout for our afternoon tournament on Sunday 20th July - 20 players including 7 juniors. Ewan Evans took top honours with 29 points out of 35, and Helen Dalby was a worthy second with 25. A most enjoyable afternoon.
- Thursday evenings: please contact Miles (01449) 736280 or Norman (01359) 241569 if you would like to have a game on a Thursday evening - this is a new arrangement replacing the casual Club Play.
- The new season opened on Thursday 3rd April, when we had quite a crowd, the four courts being in action all evening.
- At the Extraordinary General Meeting on 26th February the Constitution was amended to readjust the financial year to January-December (there is very little money in/out over Jan-March) and have the AGM in February. For the last few years we have had the AGM in May, but now a new committee is elected in time to make the major decisions for the coming season. Minutes of the AGM which followed the EGM will be available shortly from the Hon.Sec.

- Twenty-seven attended our Christmas Luncheon at Woolpit Village Hall on 12th Dec. Many thanks to Bridgid Hughes and Julia Eeles who organised the event and provided excellent canapés.
Provisional change to Rules for court use: since Club play on Thursdays has been poorly attended for three seasons, the committee agreed to this being suspended for 30th August, and 13th, 20th, 27th September, as well as during the winter months. Club evening on 6th September, with refreshments, will still take place. Any member who feels inconvenienced by the change should contact Norman Kenyon (01359-241569).
DOE Sport did not make a very good job of the resurfacing (November 2005). Apparently the tarmac was not hot enough when first laid, and many of the 'seams' are visible - in some places, notably the south-west quarter of Court No.1, the density was insufficient and the surface too weak. The error was compounded by re-rolling after the paint was applied, and as a result the grey aggregate showed through the damaged paint in many places.
The contractor resurfaced part of Court 1 and repainted all the courts, so we finally accepted the work. The courts now look good, and are thankfully are not slippery when wet. There is a legacy of the saga - because the courts have already been painted twice now, when in 5 years' time they have faded and need repainting, the porosity will be poorer than we would otherwise have expected.
The Junior Box League has been abandoned - although 12 signed up only 3 matches were played - does this mean that they don't know how to use the 'phone?
The Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 17th May. Contact the Hon.Sec if you would like a copy of the minutes.
Teams to play in the inter-club Leagues: we decided to put one men's and one ladies' team in the Norfolk & Suffolk League, and one each of Ladies' and Mixed in the Ipswich & District League. See our matches page and contact the captain if you are interested in playing.

- We will be holding Junior Tournaments on one Sunday afternoon per month, starting again on nth October, thereafter the first Sunday of the month (1st October, 5th November, 3rd December) if there is enough support. Starting time: 2 pm. Look at the noticeboard at the Club, or give Linda a call. Senior members please note that we will still have one or two courts available for Club play.
- Junior Matches: Linda Whipp has been running a programme of matches for Girls (under-14) and Boys (under-12, under-14, under-16) and has posted the results of these matches on our Matches Page. Linda says "I would like to thank everyone who took part in these matches and to thank the parents for their support throughout - I would also like to thank the organisers for each team:
Helen Wilson, Mark Merriam, Sue Banks, Jane Mitchell & Penny Mathieson". The committee echoes her thanks, and a big Thank-You to Linda too for her hard work.
- The repainted courts were finally reopened on 1st June. They're looking good - try them!
- Woolpit Tennis Club AGM was on Thursday the 18th May in Woolpit Village Hall - about 20 people attended. A new committee was elected.
- The resurfaced courts have played well over the winter (sorry about the increased wear-and-tear on the balls, but it can't be helped). The contractor will be back soon to apply some more binder and then the green/red colouring - the courts will have to be out of bounds for a few days when that is done, and unfortunately it will not be possible to give much notice of the exact date.

- Christmas Lunch at the Gardeners Arms: but at least the company was good! Pictures.
- Sunday afternoon Club Play: interested? - join the list.
- Annual General Meeting on Monday 1st November at 8 pm in Woolpit Institute. We welcomed Chris Wright as our new Chairman, and John Ketterer as Treasurer; and said a big Thank You to Jane Harvey and Wendy Ford respectively for bearing these crosses for the last few years. Thanks also to retiring committee members Jonathan Davies, Dave Dalby, Barrie James and Oliver Pryke.
The new line-up is on our officials page.
Proposal #1: that the Woolpit Tennis Club install a fourth court as soon as possible.
This was carried with an amendment to the effect that the resurfacing of the existing courts being carried out also, and that due financial account be taken of the need to maintain our existing facilities.
Proposal #2: that the future committee urgently consider ways of improving club competitions to increase participation and to consider better prizes for those taking part especially juniors.
Also carried.
The Constitution has been amended according a formal proposal, such that the financial year will now coincide with the subscription year, making it much easier to interpret the accounts.
Good company and the finest weather marked our Finals Day. A big Thank you to Andy Rollett and Jonathan Davies and their families for making the barbecue happen, to Heather Cripps for organising the junior finals, and to Roger Eburne for making the presentations. Thanks, too, to all who turned out to support. We greatly enjoyed the matches - three age-groups of Boys finals and the Men's Singles. Congrats to the winners (see Results) and commiseration to the losers.
Once again the ladies have triumphed, winning the final of the Norfolk & Suffolk League knock-out on 28th August at the Newmarket club, beating Fordham 8-0.
Our mixed team were less fortunate, having to play Newmarket on their ground in the semi-final on 18th August, in wet and poor light conditions - we lost 1-7; they fed us well, though, and we told them we'd have thrashed them at home!
Continuing their triumphal progress, the Ladies beat Burwell 8-0 in the semi-final of the Norfolk & Suffolk League knock-out (Tuesday 13th July).
Our men's team had the narrowest of victories in their first round of the annual knock-out competition (Norfolk & Suffolk League) against Fordham, being equal on sets but two ahead in games. Our team was Dave Warner & Tony Bass, Oliver Pryke & Barrie James.
Happy birthday to Liz Pratt! Some 20 members gathered around at Chris Wright's mansion to celebrate - see pictures.
Victory for our Ladies team in the first two rounds of the annual knock-out competition (Norfolk and Suffolk League): in the first round they trounced Exning (on their own courts) by 8-0. Our team was Pippa Harvey, Trish Armitage, Linda Whipp and Pat Ward. In the second round against Fordham on 11th May the score was again 8-0. Well done, girls!
Our thanks to Jonathan Davies and Dave Dalby for the splendid new path from the gate to the clubhouse - a day of back breaking toil! And to Andy Rollett and Norman Kenyon for their contributions.
There will be Junior Club sessions on Fridays from 7th May, starting at 6:00 pm, until 7:30 pm. Come along and get a game with other juniors, under the supervision of John Graham. There is no charge for these sessions.
John is a qualified LTA coach.
We entered a very young team in the National Junior Club League 2004 Girls under 11 competition. They were very brave (it must be quite daunting facing a 10-year-old when you are only 8 yourself!), but were outmatched by Felixstowe and Next Generation. Good experience for the young ladies, Helen Dalby, Rebecca Laidlaw and Hannah Merriam, and we wish them well in the matches to come.
The draw for the Tournaments is now posted; sadly, entries are further down on last year, leaving us with no Mixed or Ladies competitions this time.
The new season approacheth - see the March Newsletter now available. Members will receive their Programme cards and requests for payment of subscriptions (same rates as last year!) soon after 8th March.
And do consider signing up for the Singles Ladder we are just commencing.
2003
Social evening on Friday 12th December from 6pm, in Woolpit Institute (on the corner, opposite the Church). All members and their partners etc. are welcome - food will be provided by the club and the wine etc. will be available for a donation. Please do come whether it is for the evening or just pop in and meet up with other members of the club - we can assure you and your family of a warm welcome.!
Please take a look at our proposed Singles Ladder and let me (Norman) know what you think.
23 stalwarts came to drink the wine at the AGM on Monday, and afterwards we had a presentation from David Hall (Suffolk LTA) on club development. Thanks to retiring HonSec Jenny Semmens for a job well done, and to Jane Cox for taking this rôle on. Barrie James joins the committee (Liam having stepped down). Minutes of the meeting will be posted here in due course.
In an effort to revive Sunday afternoon club play, there will be two committee members present each time, so you can be sure of a game.
We had very good weather for the tournament finals, and enjoyed some really delicious scones, cakes and apple pie provided by the Carroll family and David Nelhams. See results and pictures.
(29th July) More opportunities to play with other members..............
- Thursday evenings: at least two committee members will be along for a game every Thursday evening from 7 pm, starting on 31st July for a trial period; we'd like as many members to come as possible (including students and juniors of a good standard) so that everybody gets a good mix and meets new friends to play with.
- For members interested in team doubles play, there will be sessions on Monday evenings from 6:30 pm, starting on 15th September (probably), along the lines of the very successful sessions at the start of the season.
- Also for members interested in team doubles play, there will be special coaching sessions on 17th and 24th September (Wednesdays). Each session will be for 2 hours, and we hope to have 12 different members booked for the two evenings. To reserve your place, sign up at the club or ring a committee member and pay the nominal fee of £2.
(23rd July) The Ladies team, playing in the Norfolk & Suffolk League knock-out competition, triumphed over Exning in the semi-final, played at home on Tuesday 22nd July. The score-line of 8 sets to nil seemed quite unfair on the visitors, who played extremely well and almost every set was very close-fought. Congrats anyway, ladies!
(May) The committee decided to allow a certain amount of court booking (one hour per week, as a trial) for members wishing to be certain that they have a court available when they come; this is in addition to the previous provision for booking tournament or other matches. We hope nobody will abuse the system by booking and then not playing, other than because of rain.
Rita Kenyon reached a ripish age on 26th April, but was treated to a South Africa holiday to mark the occasion; she was was feted by club members on 14th May, courtesy of Pippa Harvey; more pictures.
(17th April) The seasonal tournament draw has been put up.
(26 February 2003) Eighteen of us couldn't resist the temptation for another nosh, and an excellent excuse was Chris Wright's transition into antiquity....more pictures.
