1986 Crown Mill (Baker)

Crown Mill
When I came to the village in 1988, this structure, and the thatched farmhouse in front of it, had already deteriorated beyond redemption, and they were pulled down a few years later to make way for the housing estate.

The unusual subject for this week’s drawing by Mercury artist Jono Mawford is R. Baker and Son’s premises beside the railway line at Elmswell. The firm, which is now managed by the third generation Baker, Mr Jim Baker, employs about 20 people and manufactures animal feedstuffs. The factory was built at the beginning of the century and requisitioned for flour milling during the last war. Eagle-eyed Lovejoy viewers may have spotted the building when the BBC screened part of one episode in Elmswell.
