Programme for 2020-21
9th January 2020 Keely Taylor: “How to Build Your Family Tree“. Keely is another new speaker to EHG and is a local genealogist. By using real-life examples, she will demonstrate what needs to be done as a beginner genealogist, as well as explaining some of the pitfalls and surprises that may await you.
13th February Terry O’Donoghue: “Bury’s Guildhall“. We welcome Terry to EHG for the first time. He is a registered Bury Town Guide who also works at The Guildhall. He will trace the Guildhall’s history from its very beginnings of about 800 years ago (it is the oldest continuously-used civic building in Britain), the changes over the centuries, and its many civil and military uses. The talk will also illustrate the importance of the Guildhall in both local and national history through a few characters (monks, monarchs, merchants, and miscreants) and momentous events, where it played a central role, to give us a fascinating historical tapestry of this building in our lovely market town.
12th March Frances Hart: “British Canals and Waterways“. As another new speaker to EHG, we are pleased to welcome Frances who will tell us the enthralling story of the people involved and how the British waterways came to be built, plus superb slides of scenery, locks, bridges and aqueducts and the local River Gipping.
